English

EngSoc exists to enhance and expand your University experience – both academic and social.

Socials

EngSoc socials are hugely varied; they range from nights out in Leeds, to formal balls, to coffee and cake breaks on the lawn. Our two major events are the Fresher's Party and the Christmas Ball.

FRESHER'S PARTY

Wednesday 29th September, Mine (in the Union), 9-close, LIVE MUSIC, DJ AND DRINK THE BAR DRY!

£3 members, £5 non-members

Tickets available online at leedstickets.com, from CATS (in the Union) and the School of English foyer during Fresher's Fortnight (details on times coming soon).

Talks and Trips

We aim to enhance your learning experience, working with staff to bring you special interest talks and discussion groups. We also arrange regular theatre trips to Leeds’ premier theatres, the West Yorkshire Playhouse and Leeds Grand Theatre.

We also take the experience of English at Leeds outside the city itself. Some of the most important literary heritage sites in the country are a short train or coach ride away, and the English Society makes it easier for you to get to them. This year we will offer daytrips to historic York, the Brontës’ house at Haworth and Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage.

This year for the first time we will be offering a weekend trip to Dublin, following in the footsteps of James Joyce and WB Yeats, taking in some of the Irish capital’s famed pub scene along the way.
